CIPFA and Rutgers University forge ties

05-03-2019

The agreement offers students and alumni of the Rutgers Master of Governmental Accounting programme an opportunity to earn global expertise.

CIPFA, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, and Rutgers Business School, part of Rutgers University, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a pathway for Rutgers students and graduates to practice government accounting outside the United States.

As a result of the MoU, students and graduates of Rutgers Business School’s Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting Programme will be given the opportunity to qualify with CIPFA as a Chartered Public Finance Accountant (CPFA) through CIPFA’s online learning platform. The first session will be open to students in September 2019, under the terms of the agreement.

Current students and alumni of the Rutgers Master’s programme will have access to the full range of CIPFA member services, including webcasts and training videos, access to special events, and international networking opportunities. Once they are a CPFA, CIPFA will support graduates in their ongoing professional development throughout their career in public finance.

The signing of the MoU took place on 27 February at Rutgers Business School in Piscataway. CIPFA CEO Rob Whiteman attended, as did top administrators from Rutgers, including Dean Lei Lei and Professor Irfan Bora, Director of the Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting.

Rob Whiteman said: “CIPFA is delighted to be entering into a partnership with Rutgers University that will allow us to share our expertise and explore common goals to the benefit, not only of the students, but the public sector globally, which can only gain through greater cooperation among government accountants.

This MoU will enable the development and retention of top talent for government accounting. CIPFA is proud to support the next generation of public finance accountants, who will be the driving force for sound public financial management around the globe.”

Professor Irfan Bora said: “It’s our pleasure to collaborate with CIPFA so we can attain our mutual goal of promoting excellence in public financial management and in serving the public interest.

“This agreement will help strengthen our graduates’ accounting careers globally, providing them with tools, training and membership.

“CIPFA’s expertise and ongoing commitment to working with partners internationally will put Rutgers Business School at the forefront of public financial management best practice.”

Additional information

The ‘CIPFA pathway’ opens in September 2019, and CIPFA is now taking expressions of interest from those who have already completed or are about to complete their Rutgers Master of Accountancy in Governmental Accounting Programme.

To complete the pathway, graduates of the Rutgers master’s programme will be required to work through two e-learning modules and a case study, concluding with an examination. All the pathway elements are delivered online through CIPFA’s own platform, making it accessible to individuals wherever they may be located.
